Sustainability in Sport

Overview of NOC Slovenia efforts on sustainability

Encouraging beginnings

The Olympic Committee of Slovenia - Association of Sports Federations (NOC Slovenia) stated in its highest legal act that it would be responsible for the protection of the environment. That all stakeholders in sport contribute to a responsible attitude towards the environment is also stipulated in the European Charter for Sport (1992, Article 10 Sport and Environmental Protection), the EU White Paper on Sport (2007, Chapter 2.8, Support for Sustainable Development) and the Olympic Charter (2001, Article 2/13).

The NOC Slovenia Commission for Sport and the Environment prepared an Environmental and Nature Protection Code, which was approved by the NOC Slovenia Executive Board on 15 May 2012 and adopted by the NOC Slovenia General Assembly on 19 June 2012.

The list of organisations that have signed up to the provisions of the NOC Slovenia Environmental and Conservation Code can be found here.

Active role of the OCS-ASF (NOC Slovenia)

The Olympic Committee of Slovenia - Association of Sports Federations (NOC Slovenia), as the umbrella sports organisation in Slovenia, will lead the debate on sustainability in sport. It will build the future of Slovenian sport on the foundations of sustainable development.
On the initiative and with the financial support of the IOC, NOC Slovenia has also approached the preparation of a Sustainability Strategy in 2022 and 2023, as it understands the sustainability transition as a necessary and inevitable change in the way it operates and co-shapes the sport environment, which at the same time influences the general sporting public.

The Sustainability Strategy of the NOC Slovenia, which was adopted by the General Assembly on 12 June 2024, is the fundamental document with which the NOC Slovenia will take the first coordinated steps towards a sustainable way of doing business and operating in the period from 2024 to 2030.

The objectives, which are aligned with the guidelines of the IOC Sustainability Strategy and aligned with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, not only presuppose a sustainable transition of the NOC Slovenia organisation, but also create the conditions for a sustainable transition of the related stakeholders of the Slovenian sport ecosystem.

Sustainability Commitment

At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the President of the NOC Slovenia, Mr. Franjo Bobinac, also signed the United Nations Sustainable Commitment "Sport for Climate Action" (UN S4CA).
